Photobiomodulation explained for clinicians new to laser therapy

Photobiomodulation describes the use of light to produce a photochemical effect in tissue without generating clinically relevant heat. It is the mechanism underlying low-level laser therapy.
The distinction from thermal lasers matters clinically. Thermal devices work by controlled tissue injury and carry the associated risk profile. Non-thermal devices modulate cellular behaviour without ablation, which is why downtime and adverse-event rates are so different.
In adipose tissue specifically, the documented mechanism is a transitory pore in the cell membrane that allows stored lipid to exit. The cell stays viable throughout.
For clinics adding laser therapy, the training implication is that protocol adherence — positioning, duration, session spacing — matters more than operator technique in the way it does with thermal devices.
